Be Circumspect and Stay Focused

July 2, 2008

Sometimes we set out to do something and things happen on the road of life and we can lose focus. Yet the Word tells us to “walk circumspectly”. We are supposed to stay alert and be aware of the circumstances around us so that we can speak God’s word concerning the situation. The Bible says in Ephesians 5:15, “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” (KJV) We need to stay focused even through interruptions which will surely show up.
br> Jesus always stayed focused, no matter what He came up against. He always stayed right on track with His original assignment. You might say, “Oh yes, but Jesus is the Lord”. Yes, He is the Lord, but He was born through Mary (flesh) and so when He was on the earth He was flesh and blood like us. He had to ask God for help like we do today. God answered Him and God will answer us today. Look at Heb. 5:7. It says, “Who in the days of his flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications…” (KJV) Jesus was flesh and blood on the earth and He prayed to the Father. Jesus never lost His focus even after everything He went through. In Mark 9:14-29, we find the story of the demon possessed boy. The boy’s father told Jesus that the disciples were unable to help his son. Verse 19 says that Jesus answered him (the father), but He was actually talking to His disciples. He called them “faithless generation”. He asked the father how long the boy had been sick and the father said he was sick since childhood. Then the father started telling Jesus all kinds of details which could have distracted Jesus. Then a crowd gathered which could have been another distraction. Jesus did not lose track of what He was about to do. He just cast the demon out and the boy was healed.

In Mark 5, we again see that Jesus always stayed focused on the job at hand. We find the story of Jairus and his sick daughter. Jairus approached Jesus and begged Him to lay His hands on his daughter and that even though she was at the point of death he knew Jesus could heal her. The Bible tells us that Jesus began to follow Jairus, but in verse 25-34 we see Jesus interrupted by the “woman with the issue of blood”. Jesus ministered to her, or rather; she was very bold and just “took” her healing by touching His clothes. In verse 35 we see that Jesus could have very easily lost focus because Jairus’ men came and told Jairus his daughter had died and to not trouble the Master any longer. In verse 36 Jesus tells Jairus, “Be not afraid, only believe”. Believe what? In verse 23 Jairus had said that if Jesus laid hands on his daughter she would be healed and live. Jesus had not lost focus. His thoughts were, “When I get there I will lay hands on her and she will be healed and live”. He did not get distracted, He stayed focused, focused, focused! If you read the rest of that chapter you will see that the girl was raised from the dead. Praise the Lord Jesus!

In John 11, we see another instance where Jesus was interrupted, but stayed on course and did the “works of the Father”. In the story of Lazarus being raised from the dead, both Martha and Mary tried to tell Jesus that if He had been present Lazarus would not have died. In verse 23, Jesus tells Martha that Lazarus will rise again and Martha starts talking about the resurrection at the last day. Jesus’ intentions were too much for her to comprehend. Jesus did not waste any time. He just kept on going to the village. Then Mary meets Him in verse 32 with the same accusation. “Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died”. Jesus kept going on to the grave and then Martha makes one more attempt to hold him back by telling Jesus He is too late, that it has been four days and Lazarus “stinketh” (his body has decayed). Jesus would not lose focus. He went on and called Lazarus from the dead and Lazarus came alive.

What am I saying? We are subject to the same interruptions and distractions that Jesus went through, but He stayed focused. He walked “circumspectly”, knowing what was going on around Him and yet always going forward with the assignment at hand.

Pray this. “Father, My prayer today is that I manage to stay focused and do what I set out to do as I serve You. I want to be circumspect, to be aware of what is going on around me and yet still carry out the assignment. I want to be a blessing to those I come in contact with in all forms of communication available today. In the Name of Jesus, AMEN!!”
