Proverbs 6:2 tells us that “Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.” (KJV) The word “snare” means to trap. The Hebrew meaning is “to mislead by deception”. The word “taken” means to “cohere”. Think of super-glue. Does the word “cohesive” come to mind?
I want you to know today that our unbelief is a snare so powerful that it can keep us from doing the will of God in our lives. Our unbelief can keep us from being blessed and from being a blessing to the people we cross paths with in our daily life. Proverbs 6:2 tells us our words are “cohesive”. Cohesive to what? Our words stick firmly in our minds. Our minds dictate our actions. In Matthew 17:14-21 we see the account of the man who came to Jesus and told Jesus that the disciples were unable to help his son. Jesus rebuked the devil and the devil came out of the boy. The disciples asked Jesus why they were unable to cast out the devil. Jesus answered, “Because of your unbelief”. Jesus goes on to say in verse 21, “Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting”. What is the “kind” that Jesus is talking about? Many people say that He was saying that kind of demon will only go out if you pray and fast. That cannot be true since Mark 16:17 tells us that demons depart at the Name of Jesus. You have to realize that when Jesus is speaking, the subject of His statement is unbelief. The subject of conversation does not change in verse 21. He is still talking about their unbelief. Prayer and fasting gets rid of our unbelief. If we get rid of our unbelief, we cannot be snared with words of unbelief.
I trust this has helped you as you study today. Go to your Bible and read the scriptures. You may say, “I believe the Word of God. I am saved. I speak in tongues. He is my source. He is my healer, but I have prayed and prayed for my cousin, and he just can’t get saved.” Pray and fast, and thank the Lord that someone full of the Holy Ghost will cross paths with your loved one and they will listen, hear, and get saved. Wherever your area of unbelief is, go to the scriptures concerning God’s will for that situation. If you are having trouble receiving healing for yourself or if you lay hands on others for healing and have not seen or heard that “good report”, then pray and fast and read healing scriptures. All doubt will leave you concerning that situation and you will have the victory. In the story we looked at today, Jesus did not say, “You guys excuse me, I need to go over here and pray and fast. I am going to see what my Father says concerning demons. I will study, pray and fast and I will be right back to set this boy free.” He reacted at a moments notice. Study the scriptures and you will learn of Jesus. John 5:39 says to “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are they which testify of me.” (KJV) The Greek dictionary defines “search” as making an inquiry or to investigate. Another definition in the Greek means to utter or to speak”.
Let’s make a decision to faithfully study His word, and to pray and fast. I used to fast for days and days and God has used me tremendously. Now I realize that I do not necessarily need to fast for an extended time for God to move through me. Sometimes I just fast one day, or even just one meal. I do make it a point to pray as I am fasting, otherwise all I will accomplish is shedding a few pounds. As I fast, I pray and read scriptures, then I utter or speak what those scriptures say and God’s will is done.
